Within my career I am proud to say that my students have achieved excellent results, exceptionally high value-added scores and have regularly exceeded their target grades, whether they are naturally gifted at English or not. Resultantly, I love working with both Level 9/A* candidates and those students lower down the academic ability range and take pride in being able to quickly assess my students’ academic needs and engage with their individual learning styles, ensuring progress and improvement are achieved. I also have a great deal of experience working with students who are EAL speakers, many of whom have been from Europe or China and Hong King, as well as those with a range of SEND concerns, such as dyslexia, ADHD, mutism or who are on the autistic spectrum and some of whom are home educated for a variety of reasons.
Over the last 24 years, I have taught and tutored extensively across all year groups and in my successful career, where my lesson observations were consistently rated as ‘outstanding’, I have familiarised myself with, and delivered, a wide range of different GCSE and IGCSE curriculum requirements and syllabi and I understand all the different specification mark schemes. Having worked across both the state and private sectors, in mixed, all boys and all girls’ schools, I have a diverse breadth of expertise to draw on, so I am readily able to tailor lessons to suit particular examination mark schemes and ensure the highest outcomes. I provide students with exam strategies that have a proven track record of success and that allow them to face their exams with confidence and certainty. I am also an examiner for Eduqas and AQA exam boards.
As Second in English in high-achieving English departments for over 20 years, I have written excellent quality schemes of work for Key Stage 3, I/GCSE and A Level. For the last 15 years, at two top independent schools - Harrodian and Roedean - I was responsible for writing and marking the year 5, 11+, 13+, year 10 and sixth form entrance exam papers, therefore I have an excellent insight into what high-achieving independent and grammar schools look for in their potential students. Since becoming a freelance tutor, I have prepared students to face entrance exams for a huge array of top UK schools, including King’s College, Wimbledon, Knightsbridge School, Charterhouse, Pearse Upper, Cheltenham Ladies College, Ibstock Place, Alleyn’s, Putney Girl’s, Abingdon, St. Paul’s and Latymer among others, so my knowledge of, and familiarity with, the diverse styles of question papers has grown hugely.
